“The Newhouse Family”

SYPartners - 2019
Brand Strategy / Brand Identity / Narrative / Design Lead

we helped one of America's largest and most private family companies build the identity worthy of its next hundred years.

it was 2019, Advance was approaching its 100th year, and the Newhouse family came to us with a quiet brief — to define a narrative and identity worthy of a century most people had never heard of.

❋ The Challenge

A hundred years of building, and MOST PEOPLE don’t know their name.

Founded in 1922, Advance had grown into a three-generation family holding company behind some of the most recognizable names in media — Condé Nast (including Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair, The New Yorker), reddit, warner bros,. discovery etc.

❋ The Challenge

this family created and still stewards some of the greatest leaders in the industry.

it was Si Newhouse who installed a young Anna Wintour at the helm of Vogue, and David Remnick who has led The New Yorker for over 25 years under Advance's stewardship.

And yet the company behind it all remained almost invisible — even as a new wave of venture and private equity players entered the landscape, competing for the same deals and venture opportunities.

❋ The Discovery

We started with a hundred conversations.

We interviewed over 100 people — Editors-in-Chief’s, family members, portfolio company leaders, competitors, employees — to understand what made Advance work, and what made it different. As the narrative took shape, we built the identity in parallel, letting each insight shape the other in real time.

❋ The Discovery

What we found wasn't a single story. It was a set of tensions the family had learned to hold at once.

Advance's longevity came from its ability to hold these opposites without resolving them — generous where the industry expected restraint, bold where it expected caution. The family wasn't a footnote to the business. It was the architecture of its success.

❋ The Output

A brand identity built to carry a hundred years forward, without losing what made it quiet in the first place.

We delivered a full brand identity — including a custom typemark* — paired with a one-page narrative that distills Advance's story into something the family could finally point to. Multifaceted by design, it holds the same tensions the company itself was built on: legacy and momentum, restraint and ambition, family and enterprise.
